Abel Tasman National Park is a national park located at the north end of the South Island of New Zealand. The park was founded in 1942 and consists of forested, hilly country to the north of the valleys of the Takaka and Riwaka Rivers. It is named after Abel Tasman,  who in 1642 became the first  European explorer to sight New Zealand

WHAT TO DO?

Abel Tasman is renowned for its golden beaches, sculptured granite cliffs, and its world-famous coastal track. It also has a mild climate and is a good place to visit at any time of the year. Seakaiking, visit the Split apple Rock, water taxi, trekkings which vary from one day up to 4 days walking.

Nelson is often referred to "the sunshine capital" as it officially receives the most hours of sunshine of anywhere in New Zealand! The area’s climate – with long summers and mild winters – provide an bountiful harvest of high quality fruit each year – with apples and berries grown all around the region, which is an excellent source of seasonal work for travellers if you’re interested!

WHAT TO DO?

For natural wonders in the area visit the crystal clear Waikoropupu Springs which hold the world record for the clarity of their fresh water.  Farther west is the unique Farewell Spit. Over 100 species of birds visit this area each year, some from as far afield as the Artic circle - four wheel safaris into this area are becoming increasingly popular.

picton

Picton is a picturesque small town and the gateway to the South Island. It is also the starting point of the beautiful Queen Charlotte Walkway, as well as various kayaking trips through the Marlborough and Queen Charlotte Sounds. The ferry which crosses the Cook Strait starts or ends in Picton.

WHAT TO DO?

Walking through Queen Charlotte Track for up to 4 days. You can camp or stay in the backpackers along the way.

kaikoura

According to Maori mythology, Kaikoura is the point from where Maui fished up the North Island from the sea. The name "Kaikoura" in Maori means "meal of crayfish", which is one of the many examples of the plentiful sealife in the area. Kaikoura is about two and half hours north of Christchurch.

WHAT TO DO?

Whale watching, dolphin swimming (yes, you can actually swim with the dolphins in certain seasons), seal swimming, trout and salmon fishing and amazing costal walks, all set under the magnificent Kaikoura ranges.

Christchurch

Christchurch is known as Garden City and it is the most English city outside England. Its landmarks are the electric tram that goes around the city and The Cathedral. Through the wide sidewalks is often seeing artists and musicians performing, along with a variety of cafes, restaurants, libraries and theatres.
